Where2go.com® launches free web contest engine New service allows anyone to host a contest on the web. Oak View, CA, June 15, 2000:In their continuing effort to give small businesses a competitive edge on the web, WHERE2GO.COM today launched a FREE CONTEST ENGINE open to all businesses at www.where2go.com/contests. The free service allows anyone to host an on-line contest including the creation of rules and automatic picking of winners. Even if you already have a contest running (and do not need the contest engine), you can list it in the Where2go's contest database. Consumers can search for contests by a variety of fields including prize type, and there is a mechanism to make entering multiple contests simple and easy. Where2go® has been a leader in intelligent search technology since its launch in 1995 and is the oldest and largest “rich-context” e-business search engine on the web and is currently visited by over a million people a month. Where2go is the brain-child of HLI Systems, a software development firm, located in Southern California. HLI specializes in “intelligent systems”, creating software that simplifies complex tasks using artificial intelligence. Their approach to software is often a radical departure from conventional programming. Normally software is designed to achieve a specific function then the user interface is created, often as an after thought. HLI concentrates on simplifying the user interface and then builds intelligence into the underlying software, making it smart enough to do what is needed to cater to its human users. Their obsession with making technology "bend" to humans has lead to a new software technology they've dubbed "Flexible LogicTM". Essentially, Flexible-Logic allows for the creation of "smart" systems that can change their behavior based on the users' needs. The promise of Flexible-Logic is software that is “self aware” and “self healing”, creating systems that "bend" or change the way they operate to cater to the needs of individual users. "In 1994-1995 we saw the internet just starting to happen and realized its incredible potential, yet we were frustrated with the limits of conventional website technology and html. We decided there had to be a better way, Flexible Logic is our solution to overcoming those limits. We have used it to create "smart" websites that do everything from publish monthly on-line magazines to running entire public school districts, all without the users having to know anything about programming or html," states Doug Lochner, HLI CEO and chief visionary. In keeping with their mission to empower small businesses with sophisticated technology, in early 1995 HLI launched the Where2go.com e-business internet search engine. Where2go.com allows all businesses to get noticed on the web and provides consumers with a better (unbiased) way to find products or services. (Most search engines are highly biased. It is no accident that when searching for a product the mega-dot-coms dominate most search results. They pay dearly to be there, often buying entire categories of products and keywords!) Where2go addresses this issue by allowing all businesses (large or small) to be listed for free. To keep results unbiased, Where2go does not sell "keywords" or "categories" and their database contains considerably more detailed information than other search engines. Where2go allows anyone to do extremely complex searches easily. For example: you can search for a pet shop that sells collars, ships overnight, offers a 90 day return policy, accepts American Express and has a toll-free order line. The resulting list would only contain merchant sites that fit all the criteria. The same search on a conventional search engine would yield hundred of thousands of irrelevant listings. Consumers also benefit from detailed information on each business including address, years in business, payment, shipping, return & warranty information plus real-time ratings from other consumers. Where2go’s new contest database allows small businesses (that may not have the budget to hire programmers or web staff) to leverage their websites by holding on-line contests using software created and hosted by Where2go.com. You can also list or search for contests held on other sites. Where2go's goal is to provide consumers with a single source for information on e-merchants, contests and special offers. Where2go is a free service supported entirely by HLI Systems. "Small business really fueled the internet and the start of the "new economy". Where2go is our way of helping level the playing field and making sure everyone (including small businesses and consumers) gets a fair break," states Lochner. HLI has used its Flexible-Logic technology to power a variety of "smart" applications and websites including a series of intranet based management applications for public school districts.
